Gravitational collapse and spacetime singularities

  title={Gravitational collapse and spacetime singularities},
  author={Patrick R. Brady},
The nature of gravitational collapse was the subject of debate and controversy for much of the last century. During the 1960’s and 1970’s our understanding of general relativity consolidated and culminated in our modern understanding of black holes and spacetime singularities. Since then, there has been significant advances in understanding the dynamics of gravitational collapse and the nature of singularities that arise from collapse. This series of 5 lectures were presented at the X…

Recent developments in gravitational collapse and spacetime singularities
It is now known that when a massive star collapses under the force of its own gravity, the final fate of such a continual gravitational collapse will be either a black hole or a naked singularity
Thermodynamics and gravitational collapse
It is known now that a typical gravitational collapse in general relativity, evolving from regular initial data and under physically reasonable conditions would end in either a black hole or a naked
Investigation of gravitational collapse of generalized Vaidya spacetimes.
In this thesis, we study the gravitational collapse of generalized Vaidya spacetimes which describe a combination of lightlike and timelike matter fields, commonly known as Type I and Type II fields,
Gravitational Collapse in Quantum Einstein Gravity
The existence of spacetime singularities is one of the biggest problems of nowadays physics. According to Penrose, each physical singularity should be covered by a “cosmic censor” which prevents any
Gravitational collapse of generalised Vaidya spacetime
We study the gravitational collapse of a generalised Vaidya spacetime in the context of the Cosmic Censorship hypothesis. We develop a general mathematical framework to study the conditions on the
Collapse and dispersal of a homogeneous spin fluid in Einstein–Cartan theory
In the present work, we revisit the process of gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric homogeneous dust fluid which is described by the Oppenheimer–Snyder (OS) model (Oppenheimer and Snyder
Fate Of Gravitational Collapse In Electromagnetic Theory
In this thesis, we address the issue of gravitational collapse in electromag- netic theory.For this purpose, we adopt two approaches one by assuming charged perfect fuid in the interior of a star and
Instability of black hole formation in gravitational collapse
We consider here the classic scenario given by Oppenheimer, Snyder, and Datt, for the gravitational collapse of a massive matter cloud, and examine its stability under the introduction of small
Singular General Relativity
This work presents the foundations of Singular Semi-Riemannian Geometry and Singular General Relativity, based on the author's research. An extension of differential geometry and of Einstein's
On the visibility of singularities in general relativity and modified gravity theories
We argue that the global causal structure of the singularity is not a purely geometric property but also depends on the collapsing matter-field leading to its formation. To show this, we investigate

Einstein and the History of General Relativity
This book is a collection of essays by the authors and other people that deal with scientific opinions that led Einstein and his contemporaries to their views of general relativity. Some of the
Quantum Fields in Curved Space
This book presents a comprehensive review of the subject of gravitational effects in quantum field theory. Although the treatment is general, special emphasis is given to the Hawking black hole

Semiclassical equations for weakly inhomogeneous cosmologies.
The in-in effective action formalism is used to derive the semiclassical correction to Einstein's equations due to a massless scalar quantum field conformally coupled to small gravitational
Four-dimensional black holes in string theory.
Renormalization-group arguments are given that suggest the potential gravitational singularity of the low-energy field theory is resolved by a massive two-dimensional field theory.
Self-Consistence of Semi-Classical Gravity
Simon argued that the semi-classical theory of gravity, unless with some of its solutions excluded, is unacceptable for reasons of both self-consistency and experiment, and that it has to be replaced
This chapter discusses the Feynman Path Integral in Field Theory and path Integral Formulation of Guage Theories, as well as investigating the role of Yang-Mills and Gravity in the construction of the FPR.
