It is possible for a classical field theory to have two stable homogeneous ground states, only one of which is an absolute energy minimum. In the quantum version of the theory, the ground state of higher energy is a false vacuum, rendered unstable by barrier penetration. There exists a well-established semiclassical theory of the decay of such false vacuums. In this paper, we extend this theory to include the effects of gravitation. Contrary to naive expectation, these are not always negligible…

Heretics of the False Vacuum: Gravitational Effects On and Of Vacuum Decay. 2.

This paper reexamines the question of vacuum decay in theories of quantum gravity. In particular it suggests that decay into stable flat or AdS vacua, never occurs. Instead, vacuum decay occurs, if

Vacuum decay in the presence of gravity

: In this paper, two mechanisms for vacuum decay in field theory are compared. First, using the Coleman-de Lucia method, the transition probability between two non-degenerate vacua is computed. Then

A new approach to vacuum decay in quantum field theory, based on a simple variational formulation in field space using a tunneling potential, is ideally suited to study the effects of gravity on such

Exactly solvable vacuum decays with gravity

Using a new approach to the analysis of false vacuum decay based on the so-called tunneling potential, we develop a general method to find scalar potentials with a false vacuum with exactly solvable

Quantum and gradient corrections to false vacuum decay on a de Sitter background

We study the effects of a fixed de Sitter geometry background in scenarios of false vacuum decay. It is currently understood that bubble nucleation processes associated with first order phase

Tunneling without barriers with gravity

We consider the vacuum decay of the flat Minkowski space to an anti-de Sitter space. We find a one-parameter family of potentials that allow exact, analytical instanton solutions describing tunneling

Negative mode problem in false vacuum decay with gravity

False Vacuum Decay with Gravity in a Critical Case

The vacuum decay in a de Sitter universe is studied for the class of effective inflaton potentials that curvature at the top is less than as well as greater than a critical value determined
