ABSTRACT The scarcity of large-diameter cores in frontier wells has revived interest in grain-size analyses as an alternative tool for establishing depositional environments. Unlike sedimentary structures, which require diamond core for identification, size-frequency distributions can be computed from thin sections of sidewall cores and even cuttings. Samples of known environmental facies from widely separated areas were selected and analyzed to re-evaluate this approach. Grain-size… Expand
Grain-Size Components As Markers of Origin and Depositional Processes In the Coastal Zone of the Golfe Du Lion (Mediterranean Sea, France)
Abstract A study of beach and nearshore sands between the mouth of the River Aude and Cap d'Agde (northwestern Mediterranean Sea) shows the existence of four sediment types (ST): ST1 to ST4, with ST2Expand
Grain-size distribution of volcaniclastic rocks 2: Characterizing grain size and hydraulic sorting
Quantification of the grain size distribution of sediments allows interpretation of processes of transport and deposition. Jutzeler et al. (2012) developed a technique to determine grain sizeExpand
Influence of Mixtures of Grain-Size Populations on the Parametric and Modal Characteristics of Coastal Sands (Hérault, Mediterranean Sea, France)
Abstract Grain-size distributions in lower beach and nearshore sands of a segment of the coast of the Golfe du Lion (France) were analyzed by a parametric method and by modal analysis. The resultsExpand
Recent Sediments and Grain-Size Analysis
Following the publication of data related with the use of grain -size statistical parameters by MARTINS et al. (1997), new results from 5,295 samples of fluvial, beach and dune environments areExpand
Reservoir sandstone grain-size distributions: Implications for sequence stratigraphic and reservoir depositional modelling in Otovwe field, onshore Niger Delta Basin, Nigeria
Abstract The grain-size distribution and the complexity of the sand-body suggests a high degree of heterogeneity of the depositional environments of clastic reservoirs. To understand the facies andExpand
A review of the braided-river depositional environment
Abstract Generalized sedimentation models have been developed from a review of more than sixty recent papers on modern and ancient braided-stream deposits. Braided rivers consist of a series ofExpand
Particle size characterization of historic sediment deposition from a closed estuarine lagoon, Central California
Abstract Recent studies of estuarine sediment deposits have focused on grain size spectra as a tool to better understand depositional processes, in particular those associated with tidal inlet andExpand
The distribution of sediments and the identification of residual materials on the sea-bottom of Southern Marches (Italy)
Abstract The study of the seafloor between Ancona and San Benedetto del Tronto, which is 90 km long, is based upon 162 samples collected at depths down to 12 m below sea level. It was establishedExpand
The Lamja sandstone in Northeast Nigeria: Sedimentology and reservoir quality
The Lamja Sandstone conformably overlies the Numanha Shale. The exposures of the formation occur on the eastern and southern fringes of the Tertiary Lunguda Basalt Plateau. The Lamja SandstoneExpand
Pleistocene Episodes of Alluvial-Gravel Deposition , Southeastern Idaho
In southeastern Idaho, extensive gravel deposits occur on alluvial fans and along major streams. Gravel deposits of late Pleistocene age occur in each drainage; older gravel deposits form terraces orExpand
