Grafting of polystyrene in poly(vinylidene fluoride) films by means of energetic heavy ions

Thin PVDF foils were irradiated in the presence of oxygen with very energetic heavy ions (Xe, E = 44 MeV/amu) in the electrn stopping power energy range to produce peroxides along the ion paths. They were then grafter with styrene. Grafting yields were similar to those obtained with γ or electron irradiation. The copolymer obtained has a complex structure which is directly related to the anisotropy of the energetic ion/polymer interaction.
