The natural resource curse represents ‘‘a perfect storm’’ of influences detrimental to citizens’ well-being and stability. Resource-rich countries typically develop more slowly, are less diversified, more corrupt, less transparent, subject to greater economic volatility, more oppressive and more prone to internal conflict than nonendowed countries at similar income levels.
