Multi-color gold-nanoparticle-based tags (nanotags) are synthesized for combined surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and x-ray computed tomography (CT). The nanotags are synthesized with quasi-spherical gold nanoparticles encoded with a reporter dye (color), each with a unique Raman spectrum.
