A brief review is given of the development of equipment used for rearing germfree animals in various laboratories and of our exparience with designing germfree isolators and with the technology of rearing germfree piglets is presented. The philosophy of isolation as applied to the animal as a biological unit, the elimination of contamination and the theoretical prerequisites of isolation were considered by Reyniers (1943, 1959) and Trexler (1960).

Topics from this paper

Gnotobiotic mouse model’s contribution to understanding host–pathogen interactions
TLDR
This brief review is dedicated to the legacy of Prof. Jaroslav Šterzl and his colleagues, who laid the foundation for gnotobiology in the former Czechoslovakia 55 years, which represented a true milestone in the development of not solely Czechoslovak but also European and global immunology.

TLDR
The present paper details some of the more pertinent changes that have been made in the earlier technique (Gustafsson, 1948), which sterilized a thin-walled transparent plastic apparatus by chemical means and a flexible plastic apparatus that was used by Trexler and Reynolds (1957).
AN AUTOCLAVABLE PLASTIC UNIT FOR REARING ANIMALS UNDER GERM FREE CONDITIONS
TLDR
A plastic unit for rearing germ free animals is described, sterilized by steam under pressure and has been successfully used to rear germ free chicks.

TLDR
A lightweight stainless steel isolator which allows 3 investigators simultaneous access to an adult gnotobiotic dog for the purpose of rendering intensive care was designed and constructed and has enabled this intensive care isolator to perform a variety of manipulations on the adults in a safe, convenient, and efficient manner.

TLDR
An isolator, in which complex operations can be performed on a large gnotobiotic dog, was designed and fabricated of lightweight stainless steel and has the advantages of not being readily punctured and it requires less labor to clean and sterilize between uses.
