Glycogen has been found in thermoacidophilic archaebacteria of the genera Sulfolobus, Thermoproteus, Desulfurococcus and Thermococcus. Thermoplasma acidophilum yielded a related, though less defined compound. Glycogen was identified by elementary analysis, infrared spectroscopy, the nature of the hydrolysis products, the iodine reaction, and the nature of the products of periodate oxydation and reduction.
