Nitrogenase (=acetylene-reducing activity) was followed during photoautotrophic growth of Anabaena variabilis (ATCC 29413). When cell density increased during growth, (1) inhibition of light-dependent activity by DCMU, an inhibitor of photosynthesis, increased, and (2) nitrogenase activity in the dark decreased. Addition of fructose stabilized dark activity and alleviated the DCMU effect in cultures of high cell density.
