Hyperoxidation phenomena are suspected to be involved in dopaminergic cell death in Parkinson's disease, which affects preferentially the neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra. Glutathione peroxidase is the major protective enzyme against hydrogen peroxide toxicity.
