The mechanisms by which glutathione (GSH) depleting agents produce cellular injury, particularly liver cell injury have been reviewed. Among the model molecules most thoroughly investigated are bromobenzene and acetaminophen. The metabolism of these compounds leads to the formation of electrophilic reactants that easily conjugate with GSH.
