The presence and the functionality of a glutamatergic regulation was studied at the frog neuromuscular junction (NMJ), a singly innervated cholinergic synapse. Bath application of glutamate reduced transmitter release without affecting nerve-evoked presynaptic Ca2+ entry and handling.
