Several important and previously unrecognized roles for the neurotransmitter glutamate in the biology of primary brain tumors have recently been elucidated. Glutamate is produced and released from glioma cells via the system x(c) (-) cystine glutamate transporter as a byproduct of glutathione synthesis.
