Glutamate is the basic excitatory neurotransmitter acting via N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs). It co-regulates many important physiological functions, including learning, memory, and behaviour. An excess of glutamate, as well as NMDAR over-activity, produce pathological effects. Glutamate-related neurotoxicity is involved in the pathogenesis of many neurological conditions.
