Corticosteroid‐induced hyperglycemia is a common medical problem that can lead to frequent emergency room visits, hospital admissions and prolonged hospital stay, in addition to the well known morbidity associated with hyperglycemia. However, the diagnosis and treatment of corticosteroid‐induced hyperglycemia is surprisingly undervalued by most professionals, probably because of the lack of quality studies to determine specific strategies of action. In the present review, we discuss the…
Glucocorticoid-Induced Hyperglycemia
TLDR
Understanding the pharmacodynamics and clinical implications of glucocorticoid-induced hyperglycemia can promote recognition and improvement of its treatment and enhance care for patients receiving glucoc Corticoid treatment.
Medication-induced hyperglycemia: pediatric perspective
TLDR
The intent of this review of medications that cause hyperglycemia and their mechanisms of action is to help guide clinicians in prevention, screening and management of pediatric drug-induced hyper glycemia.
A Practical Guide for the Management of Steroid Induced Hyperglycaemia in the Hospital
TLDR
Clinical evidence of steroid induced hyperglycaemia in inpatient care impacting clinical outcome, establishment of diagnosis, diagnostic procedures and therapeutic recommendations is summarized.
Hyperglycemia Induced by Glucocorticoids in Nondiabetic Patients: A Meta-Analysis
TLDR
It is indicated that glucocorticoid-induced hyperglycemia occurs fairly frequently and points to the need for the design of prospective, randomized, controlled studies to further investigate and better understand this medical problem.
Glucocorticoid-Induced Diabetes Mellitus: An Important but Overlooked Problem
TLDR
The treatment of GIDM should take into account the degree and pattern of hyperglycemia, as well as the type, dose, and schedule of glucocorticoid used, and it is essential to instruct the patient and/or the patient's family about how to perform the necessary adjustments.
Implementation of a Weight-Based Protocol for the Management of Steroid-Induced Hyperglycemia.
TLDR
The safety of a weight-based insulin protocol for persons treated with supraphysiological doses of steroids is assessed and the efficacy of using this protocol in patients with diabetes treated with prednisone or methylprednisolone is examined.
Steroid hyperglycemia: Prevalence, early detection and therapeutic recommendations: A narrative review.
TLDR
The main epidemiologic characteristics associated with steroid use, with emphasis on the identification of high risk populations, are discussed and the pathophysiology of corticosteroid induced hyperglycemia as well as the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics associated with steroids use are presented.
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Patients with a Prior History of Corticosteroid-induced Hyperglycemia
TLDR
Of patients receiving systemic corticosteroids in the hospital, 86% experience at least one episode of hyperglycemia, and 48% have a mean blood glucose of ≥ 140 mg/dL, which is a common problem leading to frequent hospitalizations.

TLDR
A relatively simple schema for the proactive management of corticosteroid-induced hyperglycemia is proposed that has been effective and easily adaptable to both the inpatient and the outpatient setting.
Prevalence and predictors of corticosteroid-related hyperglycemia in hospitalized patients.
TLDR
In light of the poor outcomes associated with hyperglycemia, protocols targeting its detection and management should be available for patients who receive corticosteroid therapy.
Glucocorticoid-Induced Diabetes Mellitus: Prevalence and Risk Factors in Primary Renal Diseases
TLDR
Over 40% of patients with primary renal disease developed DM during treatment with corticosteroids, indicating a high age and high body mass index are the independent risk factors for glucocorticoid-induced DM.
Management of diabetes and hyperglycemia in hospitals.
TLDR
The purpose of this technical review is to evaluate the evidence relating to the management of hyperglycemia in hospitals, with particular focus on the issue of glycemic control and its possible impact on hospital outcomes.
Risk factors for steroid diabetes in rheumatic patients.
TLDR
It is suggested that high cumulated prednisone dose may induce DM regardless of another hereditary or personal predisposing factor.
Novel insights into glucocorticoid‐mediated diabetogenic effects: towards expansion of therapeutic options?
At pharmacological concentrations, glucocorticoids (GCs) display potent anti‐inflammatory effects, and are therefore frequently prescribed by physicians to treat a wide variety of diseases. Despite
Glucose intolerance after renal transplantation depends upon prednisolone dose and recipient age.
TLDR
Increased prednisolone dose and older age are strongly associated with the development of posttransplant glucose intolerance.
Acute and 2-week exposure to prednisolone impair different aspects of beta-cell function in healthy men.
TLDR
Acute and short-term exposure to prednisolone impairs different aspects of beta-cell function, which contribute to its diabetogenic effects.
