Aims. Updated data of the 153 Galactic globular clusters are used to readdress fundamental parameters of the Milky Way, such as the distance of the Sun to the Galactic centre, the bulge and halo structural parameters, and cluster destruction rates. Methods. We build a reduced sample that has been decontaminated of all the clusters younger than 10 Gyr and of those with retrograde orbits and/or evidence of relation to dwarf galaxies. The reduced sample contains 116 globular clusters that are…

A MUSE study of the inner bulge globular cluster Terzan 9: a fossil record in the Galaxy
Context. Moderately metal-poor inner bulge globular clusters are relics of a generation of long-lived stars that formed in the early Galaxy. Terzan 9, projected at 4°.12 from the Galactic center, is
Full spectral fitting of Milky Way and M 31 globular clusters: ages and metallicities
Context: The formation and evolution of disk galaxies are long standing questions in Astronomy. Understanding the properties of globular cluster systems can lead to important insights on the
The nuclear cluster of the Milky Way: total mass and luminosity
Like many other late-type galaxies, the Milky Way contains a nuclear star cluster. In this work we obtain the basic properties of its dominant old stellar population. Firstly, we derive its
FSR 584 – a new globular cluster in the Galaxy?
Aims. We investigate the nature of the recently catalogued star cluster candidate FSR 584, which is projected in the direction of the molecular cloud W 3 and may be the nearest globular cluster to
Globular Clusters in the Galactic Bulge
Abstract A view of the Galactic bulge by means of their globular clusters is fundamental for a deep understanding of its formation and evolution. Connections between the globular cluster and field
Mapping the galaxy NGC 4486 (M87) through its globular cluster system
As shown in previous works, globular clusters (GCs) can be used to trace the overall structure of the diffuse stellar populations in early-type galaxies if the number of clusters per unit stellar
Spectroscopy of globular clusters in the low-luminosity spiral galaxy NGC 45
Context. Extragalactic globular clusters have been studied in elliptical galaxies and in a few luminous spiral galaxies, but little is known about globular clusters in low-luminosity spirals. Aims.
The Milky Way globular cluster system within the context of a closed box
Metallicities of the Milky Way globular cluster (GC) system are interpreted within the framework of a closed box model of chemical evolution. Model age-metallicity relations normalised to the Sun are
The outer halo globular clusters of M31
We present Keck/HIRES spectra of three globular clusters in the outer halo of M31, at projected distances beyond ≈80 kpc from M31. The measured recession velocities for all three globular clusters
Metallicity field and selection effects in spatial distribution of the Galactic globular cluster system
The prospects for using the present-day data on metallicity of globular clusters (GCs) of the Galaxy to put constraints on the distance to the Galactic center, $R_0$, are considered. We have found

Some Global Characteristics of the Galactic Globular Cluster System
The relations between the luminosities MV, the metallicities [Fe/H], the Galactocentric radii R, and the central concentration indices c of Galactic globular clusters are discussed. It is found that
Building Up the Globular Cluster System of the Milky Way: The Contribution of the Sagittarius Galaxy
We demonstrate that there is a clear statistical correlation between the (X, Y, Z, Vr) phase-space distribution of the outer halo Galactic globular clusters (having 10 kpc ≤ RGC ≤ 40 kpc) and the
Comparing the properties of local globular cluster systems: implications for the formation of the Galactic halo
We investigate the hypothesis that some fraction of the globular clusters presently observed in the Galactic halo formed in external dwarf galaxies. This is done by means of a detailed comparison
THE GLOBULAR CLUSTER SYSTEM OF THE CANIS MAJOR DWARF GALAXY
Prompted by the discovery of the accreted Canis Major dwarf galaxy and its associated globular cluster (GC) system, we investigate the contribution of accreted GCs to the Galactic system. The Canis
Space Velocities of Globular Clusters. III. Cluster Orbits and Halo Substructure
We have compiled a catalog of absolute proper motions of globular clusters from various sources. The sample consists of 38 clusters, from which most of the southern ones (15 clusters) were measured
The galactic globular cluster system
We explore correlations between various properties of Galactic globular clusters, using a database on 143 objects. Our goal is identify correlations and trends which can be used to test and constrain
The properties of Galactic globular cluster subsystems
In this paper we compare the properties of three subsystems of Galactic globular clusters, which are defined according to metallicity and horizontal branch morphology. We specifically focus on
Would a Galactic Bar Destroy the Globular Cluster System
Five different dynamical Galaxy models are presented for the Galactic potential which satisfy the observed rotation curve but contain a central bar so that the 3-kpc nonintersecting streamlines have
Destruction of the Galactic Globular Cluster System
We investigate the dynamical evolution of the Galactic globular cluster system in considerably greater detail than has been done hitherto, finding that destruction rates are significantly larger than
Spectroscopy of candidate young globular clusters in NGC 1275
We present spectra of the brightest member of the population of compact blue objects discovered in the peculiar galaxy NGC 1275 by Holtzman et al. (1992) using Hubble Space Telescope images. These
