In order to clarify the mechanism of Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) on learning and memory, we studied the effect of GBE on spatial memory deficits induced by diphenhydramine, pyrilamine and scopolamine using the eight-arm radial maze performance of rats, in comparison with donepezil. Total error (TE), reference memory error (RME) and working memory error (WME) were used as indices of spatial memory deficits. Both GBE and donepezil caused a potent antagonistic effect on the increase in TE, RME and… Expand
NMDA receptors are involved in Ginkgo extract-induced facilitation on memory retention of passive avoidance learning in rats
TLDR
Ginkgo was able to remove MK-801-induced forgetfulness, indicating that Ginkgo can affect memory retention but not effect on passive avoidance acquisition, using pathways other than glutamatergic system as well. Expand
Effect of Piracetam , Vinpocetine and Ginkgo Biloba Extract on Antipsychotic-Induced Impairment of Learning and Memory
TLDR
Piracetam and vinpocetine, but not Ginkgo biloba extract, alleviate haloperidol-induced impairment of learning and memory in the MWM test. Expand
Effect of Polygala tenuifolia root extract on scopolamine-induced impairment of rat spatial cognition in an eight-arm radial maze task.
TLDR
Results indicated that P. tenuifolia extracts, PTB and PTBM, and SNPA had a beneficial effect on the memory impairment induced by dysfunction of the cholinergic system in the brain. Expand
Effects of vitexin on scopolamine-induced memory impairment in rats.
TLDR
Results indicate that vitexin has a potential role in enhancing memory retrieval, and a possible mechanism is modulation of cholinergic receptors; however, other mechanisms may be involved in its effects in acute exposure. Expand
The effects of rutin on the development of pentylenetetrazole kindling and memory retrieval in rats
TLDR
The results suggest that pretreatment with rutin at 50 and 100mg/kg can attenuate seizure severity during the kindling procedure and indicate that r Rutin has a potential role in enhancing memory retrieval in kindled rats. Expand
Ginkgo biloba protects against intermittent hypoxia-induced memory deficits and hippocampal DNA damage in rats.
TLDR
EGb 761 can protect against IH-induced memory impairment, oxidative stress and neuronal DNA damage, possibly through multiple mechanisms involving its potential anti-oxidative effect. Expand
The impact of flavonoids on spatial memory in rodents: from behaviour to underlying hippocampal mechanisms
TLDR
An overview of how the hippocampal circuitry operates as a memory system during behavioural tasks is given, which is believed to provide a new insight into the underlying mechanisms of the action of flavonoids on cognition. Expand
The effects of rutin on a passive avoidance test in rats
TLDR
Rutin significantly increased the step-through latency of the passive avoidance response compared to the control in the three retention tests of the Passive avoidance paradigm, indicating that rutin has a potential role in enhancing memory retrieval in a passive avoidance task. Expand
Neural and Behavioural Effects of the Ginkgo biloba Leaf Extract Egb 761
TLDR
The possible neurogenic-enhancing effects of Ginkgo on adult hippocampal neurogenesis as a possible mechanism underlying its nootropic effects have not been evaluated, and experiments discussed in the present thesis assessed such a possibility. Expand
Review on experimental research of herbal medicines with anti-amnesic activity.
TLDR
This review discusses the research findings on novel plant extracts and their bioactives with anti-amnesic effects on different neurotransmitter systems and their implications for treatment of amnesia. Expand

[Effect of Ginkgo biloba extract on memory deficits in radial maze performance induced by some drugs in rats].
TLDR
The findings suggest that the effect of Ginkgo biloba extract is mediated not only by the cholinergic system but also by the histaminergic system to induce learning and memory enhancements. Expand
Effects of four non-cholinergic cognitive enhancers in comparison with tacrine and galanthamine on scopolamine-induced amnesia in rats
TLDR
Four so-called cognitive enhancers, all widely used for the treatment of the symptoms associated with mental aging, cerebral insufficiency and senile memory disorder, were investigated in this passive avoidance paradigm and Piracetam, an extract of Ginkgo biloba, dihydroergocristine and a combination of raubasine with dihydromine, all attenuated the amnesia induced by scopolamine. Expand
Donepezil, a centrally acting acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, alleviates learning deficits in hypocholinergic models in rats.
TLDR
It is suggested that donepezil can clearly minimize learning impairments induced by treatments that cause central cholinergic deficiencies in rats, and these findings support the clinical efficacy ofdonepezil in Alzheimer's disease. Expand
Effects of the cholinesterase inhibitors donepezil and metrifonate on scopolamine-induced impairments in the spatial cone field orientation task in rats
TLDR
A cholinesterase inhibitor with proven clinical efficacy can antagonize scopolamine-induced spatial memory deficits, and the cone field would be a useful component of a behavioral screening battery to test the effects of putative cognition enhancers. Expand
Effects of vasopressin on histamine H(1) receptor antagonist-induced spatial memory deficits in rats.
TLDR
It seems likely that [Arg(8)] vasopressin participates in not only the cholinergic system but also the histaminergic system in spatial memory as it improved not only scopolamine--but also pyrilamine--and diphenhydramine-induced memory deficits. Expand
Effects of Intracerebroventricular Injection of α-Fluoromethylhistidine on Radial Maze Performance in Rats
TLDR
Pyrilamine and R-(alpha)-methylhistamine enhanced the memory deficit induced by alpha-FMH, at doses that had no appreciable effect when administered alone, and no significant influence on alpha- FMH-induced memory deficit was observed with zolantidine. Expand
The Effects of an Extract of Ginkgo biloba, EGb 761, on Cognitive Behavior and Longevity in the Rat
TLDR
The data suggest that the methods employed, i.e., continuous learning and delayed nonmatching to position tasks in aged rats, are capable of detecting drugs of possible value in the treatment of human cognitive impairment. Expand
Selective 5-HT1A Antagonists WAY 100635 and NAD-299 Attenuate the Impairment of Passive Avoidance Caused by Scopolamine in the Rat
TLDR
The results suggest that 5-HT1A receptor antagonists may have a potential in the treatment of cognitive symptoms in psychopathologies characterized by reduced ACh transmission such as Alzheimer's disease. Expand
Effect of histamine on memory retrieval in old rats.
TLDR
It is concluded that Hi takes an active part in facilitating memory recall via H1-receptor in old rats through its involvement in Hi-induced facilitation of memory retrieval. Expand
Influence of histamine depletion on learning and memory recollection in rats
TLDR
It was concluded that an intimate relation may exist between a prolongation of response latency in the active avoidance response and a decrease in the brain histamine content; endogenous histamine may play an important role in learning and memory recollection in rats. Expand
