Abstract: Verticillium nigrescens is not congeneric with Verticillium s. str., as shown in cladograms based on LSU and ITS sequences. Both genera and a few other taxa form a separate, new family, the Plectosphaerellaceae, in which Plectosphaerella cucumerina is the only known teleomorph taxon. The species is conspecific with Gibellulopsis piscis, which provides a suitable generic name. The available isolates are not completely homogeneous as shown in tef1 analysis. This frequent saprotrophic…

Newly recognised lineages of perithecial ascomycetes: the new orders Conioscyphales and Pleurotheciales

Two monophyletic clades closely related to the Savoryellales, formed by five species of Conioscypha and a second clade containing several genera of uncertain taxonomic status centred on Pleurothecium, represent two distinct taxonomic groups at the ordinal systematic rank.

Anamorphic chaetosphaeriaceous fungi from China

The family Chaetosphaeriaceae is expanded to accommodate 89 accepted genera, including 22 new genera and 10 newly assigned genera in China, based on a systematic study with an integrated approach of morphological observation and phylogenetic analysis for a large collection.

Novel halotolerant species of Emericellopsis and Parasarocladium associated with macroalgae in an estuarine environment

Endophytic isolates were obtained from macroalgae from various sites in the estuary Ria de Aveiro (Portugal), as well as from saline water and sponges and six Acremonium-like species could not be affiliated to any known species.

Wenhsuisporus taiwanensis gen. et sp. nov., a peculiar setose hyphomycete from submerged wood in Taiwan

A dematiaceous hyphomycete occurring on decaying wood submerged in a freshwater stream of Taiwan, is proposed based on morphological and molecular data and placed within the Sordariomycetes, closely related to the Reticulascaceae of the Glomerellales.

Towards a natural classification and backbone tree for Sordariomycetes

An updated outline of the Sordariomycetes and a backbone tree incorporating asexual and sexual genera in the class are provided and new links between sexual and asexual genera and thus synonymies are provided.

Sodiomyces alkalinus, a new holomorphic alkaliphilic ascomycete within the Plectosphaerellaceae

The Plectosphaerellaceae family is proposed to be the source of alkaliphilic filamentous fungi as also the species known as Acremonium alcalophilum belongs to this group.

Fungal Infection of Mantis Shrimp (Oratosquilla oratoria) Caused by Two Anamorphic Fungi Found in Japan

Two fungal pathogens of the mantis shrimp in Yamaguchi and Aichi Prefectures, Japan are described as the new species Plectosporium oratosquillae and Acremonium sp.

Families of Sordariomycetes

This paper reviews the 107 families of the class Sordariomycetes and provides a modified backbone tree based on phylogenetic analysis of four combined loci, with a maximum five representative taxa from each family, where available.

Verticillium systematics and evolution: how confusion impedes Verticillium wilt management and how to resolve it.

It is shown that species names are a poor vehicle for archiving and retrieving information and that species identifications should always be backed up by DNA sequence data and DNA extracts that are made publicly available, and that adoption of this system would improve quarantine practices and the management of diseases caused by various plant pathogens.
