Giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) at risk? Total mercury and methylmercury levels in fish and otter scats, Peru
@inproceedings{Gutleb1997GiantO, title={Giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) at risk? Total mercury and methylmercury levels in fish and otter scats, Peru}, author={Arno C. Gutleb and Christof Schenck and Elke Staib}, year={1997} }
Mercury and methylmercury levels in fish muscle and scats of the giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) of Manu National Park, Peru, and in one gold-mining area in the vicinity of its borders were analyzed. In 68% of fish muscles, total mercury levels exceeded the proposed maximum tolerable level of 0.1 mg kg-' fresh weight in fish for the European otter (Lutra lutra), and 17.6% exceeded 0.5 mg kg-1 fresh weight, the most common standard for human consumption. The ratio of methylmercury to total…

Fish Hg concentrations exceeding current safe limits for human consumption were found mainly in the piscivorous species, and opportunity fish catches in the Rio Negro habitat show high muscle-Hg derived from natural sources, but no systematic association with site-dependent geochemistry.
Mercury Levels in Human Hair and Farmed Fish near Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining Communities in the Madre de Dios River Basin, Peru
- Environmental ScienceInternational journal of environmental research and public health
- 2017
Examination of patterns in the total hair mercury level of human participants in several communities in the region and mercury levels of fish raised in local aquaculture ponds indicated that higher hair mercury levels were associated with residence in ASGM communities, aligning with other recent studies showing that ASGM activities are associated with elevated human mercury exposure.

The data indicate that Hg is an important threat to jaguars within at-risk regions of the Pantanal, and therefore Jaguars show great potential to accumulate Hg by biomagnification.
