Flexoelectricity is a coupling between orientational deformation and electric polarization. We present a direct method for measuring the flexoelectric coefficients of nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) via the electric current produced by periodic mechanical flexing of the NLC's bounding surfaces. This method is suitable for measuring the response of bent-core liquid crystals, which are expected to demonstrate a much larger flexoelectric effect than traditional, calamitic liquid crystals. Our…

Converse flexoelectric effect in a bent-core nematic liquid crystal.

The converse of the flexoelectric effect is reported: An electric field applied across a bent-core liquid crystal sandwiched between thin flexible substrates produces a director distortion which is manifested as a polarity-dependent flexing of the substrates.

Flexoelectric effect of a rod-like nematic liquid crystal doped with highly-kinked bent-core molecules for energy converting components

The flexoelectric effect of a rod-like nematic liquid crystal (pentyl-cyanobiphenyl, 5CB) doped with bent-core liquid crystals with a high kink angle ∼130° was studied. Although the previous

Flexoelectricity of a calamitic liquid crystal elastomer swollen with a bent-core liquid crystal

We have measured the electric current induced by mechanical distortion of a calamitic liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) swollen with a low molecular weight bent-core nematic (BCN) liquid crystal, and

Flexoelectricity in an oxadiazole bent-core nematic liquid crystal

We have determined experimentally the magnitude of the difference in the splay and bend flexoelectric coefficients, |e 1 − e 3|, of an oxadiazole bent-core liquid crystal by measuring the critical

The limits of flexoelectricity in liquid crystals

The flexoelectric conversion of mechanical to electrical energy in nematic liquid crystals is investigated using continuum theory. Since the electrical energy produced cannot exceed the mechanical

It is shown that patterned surfaces can promote bistable configurations of nematics for reasons other than the symmetry of the surface, and material parameters for which the effect might be observed lie within the range measured for bent-core nematogens.

Electro-optic characterization of a nematic phase formed by bent core mesogens

Abstract. The purpose of this paper is the demonstration that bent core nematic phases behave quantitatively and qualitatively very different from ordinary calamitic nematics in their electro-optical

Patterned flexoelectric instability in a bent-core nematic liquid crystal

We examine here the Bobylev–Pikin flexoelectric instability in an initially planar monodomain of a bent-core nematic liquid crystal, which is negative in conductivity and dielectric anisotropies.

Enhancement of flexoelectric ratio of nematic liquid crystal by doping calamitic ferroelectric liquid crystal

ABSTRACT We measured the flexoelectric ratio e* of a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) doped with a calamitic ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC). We doped two kinds of commercial FLC into the pure NLC at
