For students familiar with equilibrium statistical mechanics, the notion of a positive specific heat, being intimately related to the idea of stability, is both intuitively reasonable and mathematically provable. However, for systems in nonequilibrium stationary states, coupled to more than one energy reservoir, a negative specific heat is entirely possible. We present a minimal system that displays this phenomenon. For a system in contact with two thermal baths at different temperatures, the…

Thermal rectification and negative differential thermal resistance in a driven two segment classical Heisenberg chain
- PhysicsJournal of physics. Condensed matter : an Institute of Physics journal

It is demonstrated that by properly tuning the parameters thermal rectification can be achieved-the system behaves as a good conductor of heat along one direction but becomes a bad conductor when the thermal gradient is reversed, and crucially depends on nonlinearity and spatial asymmetry.

The phase transition of a nonequilibrium statistical-mechanical model, in which two degrees of freedom with different time scales separated from each other touch their own heat bath, is studied and finds that the negative latent heat appears in a parameter region of the model, irrespective of the order of their time scale.

A system of interacting particles, diffusing under the influence of both thermal noise and a random, external electric field which acts in a subspace of m dimensions is considered, finding the upper critical dimension to be 4-m and its behavior to fall outside the universality classes of the equilibrium Ising model and the usual driven diffusive system.
