This paper takes a cross-country perspective on the performance of German banks and some of the challenges that lie ahead, in addition to reviewing some of the various arguments for and against public involvement in banking in Germany. It is the IMF Executive Board's aim in publishing this collection to provide a unified source of lessons for countries that are committed to undertake sustainable improvements to their economic policies and institutions.
