It makes sense to study the reception of operetta in both London and New York because, as Walter James MacQueen-Pope recognized in his retrospective study of Edwardian theatre, ‘the closest theatrical interchange’ existed between the stages of the UK and USA. The same English version of Franz Lehár’s Die lustige Witwe was produced in the West End and on Broadway in the same year, 1907, and stimulated the same hearty appetite for operetta from the German stage.
