Geometric phases arise in a number of physical situations and often lead to systematic shifts in frequencies or phases measured in precision experiments. We describe, by working through some simple examples, a method to calculate geometric phases that relies only on standard quantum mechanical calculations of energy level shifts. This connection between geometric phases and off-resonant energy shifts simplifies calculation of the effect in certain situations. More generally, it also provides a…

Higher order geometric phase for qubits in a bichromatic field

The geometric phase in the dynamics of a spin qubit driven by transverse microwave (MW) and longitudinal radio frequency (RF) fields is studied. The phase acquired by the qubit during the full period

Date The final copy of this thesis has been examined by the signatories, and we find that both the content and the form meet acceptable presentation standards of scholarly work in the above mentioned

A New Limit on the Electron Electric Dipole Moment: Beam Production, Data Interpretation, and Systematics

The charge distribution associated with an electron has surprising implications for a number of outstanding mysteries in physics. Why is the universe made out of matter versus anti-matter, instead of

Improving the Limit on the Electron EDM: Data Acquisition and Systematics Studies in the ACME Experiment

The ACME collaboration has completed a measurement setting a new upper limit on the size of the electron’s permanent electric dipole moment (EDM). The existence of the EDM is well motivated by

Search for the electric dipole moment of the electron with thorium monoxide

The electric dipole moment of the electron (eEDM) is a signature of CP-violating physics beyond the standard model. We describe an ongoing experiment to measure or set improved limits to the eEDM,

A search for the electric dipole moment of the electron using thorium monoxide

A search for the electric dipole moment of the electron using thorium monoxide Amar Chandra Vutha 2011 This thesis is concerned with the conception, design and construction of an experiment to search
