Four inbred maize lines differing in chilling tolerance were used to study changes in water status and abscisic acid (ABA) levels before, during and after a chilling period. Seedlings were raised in fertilized soil at 24/22°C (day/night), 70% relative humidity. and a 12-h photoperiod with 200 μmol m-2 s-1 from fluorescent tubes.
