Singlet oxygen, 1O2 (1 delta g), fulfills essential prerequisites for a genotoxic substance, like hydroxyl radicals and other oxygen radicals: it can react efficiently with DNA and it can be generated inside cells, e.g. by photosensitization and enzymatic oxidation.
