1-Hydroxyanthraquinone and dihydroxyanthraquinones (alizarin, quinizarin, anthrarufin and chrysazin) were examined for genotoxicity in the hepatocyte/DNA repair test and for effects on oxidative phosphorylation in isolated rat liver mitochondria. Of the anthraquinone compounds tested, 1-hydroxyanthraquinone and 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone (chrysazin) induced DNA repair synthesis in rat hepatocytes, indicating their genotoxic activity.
