Interferon (IFN)-alpha is involved in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus. Studies in murine lupus models have revealed that type I IFN exerts either a protective effect in MRL/lpr, or can detrimentally impact disease progression, as in NZB/W mice.
