D. gyrociliatus has two types of eggs: a smaller type giving rise to ♂♂, and a larger type developing into ♀♀. Two mutants, which originated in laboratory cultures derived from animals collected at Helgoland, produced eggs of an abnormal size; the first, “Gr”, yielding larger-than-normal male-type eggs, the second, “Kl”, smaller male-type eggs.
