The dasyurid marsupial Smin thops i s crassicaudata (Gould) has potential as a laboratory animal suitable for genetic studies (Martin, 1965), and since 1965 a breeding colony of this species has been maintained in the Department of Genetics, University of Adalaide (Bennett et al., 1982). The colony now numbers some 400 animals derived entirely from recorded crosses.
