The Drosophila fat facets gene encodes a deubiquitinating enzyme required during eye development to limit the number of photoreceptors in each facet to eight. Ubiquitin is a small polypeptide that targets proteins for degradation by the proteasome. Deubiquitinating enzymes cleave ubiquitin-protein bonds.
