Genetic variability within and among feral populations and cultured strains of the guppy (Poecilia reticulata) was investigated by random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprinting. Feral guppies were collected from 6 isolated populations (BT, Bukit Timah; NS, Nee Soon; TS, Tuas; MF, Mount Faber; KR, Kranji; LI, laboratory-inbred feral line), while the Tuxedo and Green Variegated strains were sampled from 2 guppy farms in Singapore. Pairwise genetic distances analyzed by unweighted… Expand
Genetic Linkage Maps of the Guppy (Poecilia reticulata): Assignment of RAPD Markers to Multipoint Linkage Groups
TLDR
These primary linkage maps are the initial step toward the construction of a composite high-density map to facilitate map-based cloning and marker-assisted selection of quantitative trait loci that are essential for the development of comprehensive breeding programs for the guppy. Expand
Comparative Assessment of Genetic Variability in the Populations of Endemic and Endangered Yellow Catfish, Horabagrus brachysoma (Teleostei: Horabagridae), Based on Allozyme, RAPD, and Microsatellite Markers
TLDR
The comparative assessment of genetic diversity using allozymes, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), and microsatellite markers was conducted in endemic and endangered yellow catfish sampled from three locations in Western Ghats river systems of India, demonstrating striking genetic differentiation between pairs of H. brachysoma populations. Genetic diversity of color phenotypes in the koi (Cyprinus carpio L.) as identified by molecular markers
TLDR
Novel SNPs, distinguishing between koi and the common carp, were revealed in cytochrome b, the D-loop and in the red sensitive opsin, and the RAPD method enabled further differentiation among the four koi strains. Expand
Genetic diversity analysis using microsatellite marker in Labeo gonius (Hamilton, 1822) from two reservoirs of Uttarakhand
TLDR
The present study deals with the assessment of genetic diversity using microsatellite marker in the fish Labeo gonius from Nanak Sagar and Dhaura reservoirs of Uttarakhand having different morpho-edhaphic features and selfrecruiting populations of this fish, suggesting the possibility of less gene exchange among the two stocks. Are designer guppies inbred? Microsatellite variation in five strains of ornamental guppies, Poecilia reticulata, used for behavioral research.
TLDR
It is concluded that designer guppies are inbred compared to wild populations and differ among strains, making them useful tools for genetic studies of behavioral or life history traits. Expand
Novel polymorphic microsatellites from Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) and their utility in swordtails (Xiphophorus helleri)
TLDR
Ten microsatellites were isolated from a genomic DNA library generated from guppy enriched for CA-repeats and showed polymorphism, which could be applied to breeding programs performed on these two species and possibly other poecilids and to genetic and ecological studies. Expand
Identification of Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) Markers in Endemic Yellow Catfish, Horabagrus brachysoma (Gunther 1864)
TLDR
Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was applied to individuals of Horabagrus brachysoma sampled from three geographic locations of Western Ghat river systems in India and confirms the suitability of RAPD markers for the study of population genetic structure in yellow catfish stocks. Marked genetic divergence revealed by allozymes among populations of the guppy Poecilia reticulata (Poeciliidae), in Trinidad
TLDR
Populations of the guppy Poecilia reticulata from six locations in N.E. Trinidad were examined by starch gel electrophoresis to estimate their degree of genetic divergence, and patterns of population differentiation are discussed in relation to probable past geological and historical events, and present-day evolutionary forces. Expand
Inheritance of RAPD Markers in the Guppy Fish, Poecilia reticulata
TLDR
Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprinting offers a rapid and efficient method for generating a new series of DNA markers in fishes and could thus be used for subsequent genetic linkage mapping of the guppy. Expand
Population differentiation in Trinidadian guppies (Poecilia reticulata): patterns and problems
TLDR
Six further populations electrophoretically at 25 enzyme-coding loci are investigated to examine patterns in geographical structuring, genotypic distributions and genetic diversity of the guppy in Trinidad, with one exception, populations divided broadly in accordance with proposed ancestral colonization. Expand
Artificial introductions, evolutionary change and population differentiation in Trinidadian guppies (Poecilia reticulata: Poeciliidae)
TLDR
Genetic divergence in some marginal or isolated natural populations was similar to, or greater than, Kenny's pond guppies (Reynolds' genetic distance,R = 0·496), indicating that chance colonization and founder effects may have contributed to the observed geographic patterns of genetic differentiation in Trinidad. Genetic Differentiation Within the European Sea Bass (D. labrax) as Revealed by RAPD-PCR Assays
TLDR
It is suggested that markers are associated with genomic regions involved in tolerance for varying salinity levels and that the acclimation experiments reflected the differential survival of genotypes naturally occurring in lagoons. Expand
Linkage Analysis and Mapping of Three Sex-Linked Color Pattern Genes in the Guppy, Poecilia reticulata
TLDR
Three phenotypic color pattern genes of the guppy, i.e., black caudalpeduncle, red tail (Rdt) and variegated tail patterning (Var), were genetically analyzed and mapped to determine the gene control of these color patterns. Expand
Factors affecting the distribution of genetic variability in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata
TLDR
Results show that the predation regime mediated mating behaviour of upland and lowland populations in the wild is not as divergent as previous laboratory observations have suggested and that the observed patterns of genetic variability arise primarily as a consequence of stochastic as opposed to deterministic factors. Gene control of this highly variable mosaic pattern of black spots and patches of different shapes and sizes on a brightly colored tail fin was elucidated by reciprocal crosses between Green Variegated (GV) strain and wild-type (WT) stock. Expand
