Potential factors were analyzed that affected the formation of gene pools of two introduced beaver populations founded in the 1940s–1950s by releasing beavers from Voronezh oblast and Belarus into rivers of the Kirov and Novosibirsk oblasts. The populations from these two regions were shown to differ in four allozyme loci (Ahd-2, Gpi, Es-5, and Dia-2). Within Kirov oblast, the samples from three tributaries of the Vyatka River differed in three other loci (Ck-1, Gp-9, and Trf). It is suggested…

Assessing genetic variation and population structure of invasive North American beaver (Castor Canadensis Kuhl, 1820) in Tierra Del Fuego (Argentina)

The pattern observed is a consequence of cessation of gene flow following expansion of the founding beaver population since the time of its introduction, and contributes to the understanding of effects of genetic changes on survival ability and reproductive success of invasive species.

GENETIC VARIATION AND POPULATION STRUCTURE OF THE EURASIAN BEAVER CASTOR FIBER IN EASTERN EUROPE AND ASIA

Abstract The Eurasian beaver, Castor fiber L., suffered extreme demographic reduction through overhunting until the end of the 19th century. However, active protection measures have led to a powerful

Population genetic structure in natural and reintroduced beaver (Castor fiber) populations in Central Europe

There was an overall high genetic similarity in the species C. fiber, and no evidence was found for a clear subspecific structure in the populations studied, and the reintroduced beaver populations of different origins showed a similar low genetic heterogeneity.

Genetic relationships within colonies suggest genetic monogamy in the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber)

This work used microsatellite loci to provide parentage estimates from colonies of the Eurasian beaver in the Kirov region, Russia to suggest that while colonies may comprise both related and unrelated individuals, the genetic mating system appears to match that of the previously inferred social monogamy.

BIOLOGICAL AND GENETIC PECULIARITIES OF CROSS-COMPOSED AND ABORIGINAL BEAVER POPULATIONS IN RUSSIA

Highly productive cross-composed populations are of great value for game husbandry while aboriginal forms – the product of natural selection – are important components of recent biodiversity.

Beaver trapping in Russia and Belarus and problems of resources management

In the Soviet Union experimental kill trapping (removal trapping) of Eurasian beaver began in 1960 in the Kirov region, and since 1963 the limited kill trapping was also permitted throughout Russia

Mitochondrial phylogeography of the Eurasian beaver Castor fiber L.

The low level of sequence divergence of the entire cytochrome b gene among six individuals representing six subspecies suggests differentiation during the last glacial period and existence of multiple glacial refugia.

Population-Genetic Structure of Beaver (Castor fiber L., 1758) Communities and Estimation of Effective Reproductive Size Ne of an Elementary Population

The conclusion is drawn that the founder effect could be the primary factor of population differentiation only at the time of their formation, and the suggestion that an elementary population of European beaver is a colony, i.e., a set of related settles of different types.

Two Programs to Estimate Significance of χ2 Values Using Pseudo-Probability Tests

Two programs, CHIRXC and CHIHW, which estimate the significance of x statistics using pseudo-probability tests, permit analysis of sparse table data without pooling rare categories and prevents loss of information.
