Sri Lanka is a developing country that has achieved control over its population growth and maintained health indices despite a crippling civil war. Among scientists, doctors and some members of the public in Sri Lanka there is an increasing awareness of the role of genes in the causation or predisposition to disease. This chapter aims to review the current state of medical genetics in Sri Lanka, deficiencies that have not been addressed and the likely future developments in this field.
