The melanogaster subgroup is one of twelve in the Drosophila melanogaster species group (Bock and Wheeler, 1972). For many years this subgroup only comprised the sibling species D. melanogaster and D. simulans. More recently four new African species, belonging to the melanogaster subgroup, have been described: D. yakuba (Burla, 1954); D. teissieri (Tsacas, 1971); D. mauritiana (Tsacas and David, 1974); and D. erecta (Tsacas and Lachaise, 1974).
