Some 30 years have passed since the first protein structures were determined by X-ray crystallography, and since Anfinsen and co-workers established that the information for determining conformation could be contained solely within the polypeptide chain (see Anfinsen, 1973). The three-dimensional structure of more than 200 proteins is known to atomic resolution. For each of these proteins, and for thousands more, the amino acid sequence is also known exactly.
