The seed oil of meadowfoam, a new crop in the Limnanthaceae family, is highly enriched in very long chain fatty acids that are desaturated at the Δ5 position. The unusual oil is desirable for cosmetics and innovative industrial applications and the seed meal remaining after oil extraction contains glucolimnanthin, a methoxylated benzylglucosinolate whose degradation products are herbicidal and anti-microbial. Here we describe EST analysis of the developing seed transcriptome that identified…

The glucosinolate (GSL) profiles of four Limnanthaceae species, including the oil crop Limnanthes alba (meadowfoam), were investigated by an ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole
Two- and Three-Dimensional Spectrofluorimetric Qualitative Analysis of Selected Vegetable Oils for Biomedical Applications

Glucosinolates in the new oilseed crop meadowfoam: natural variation in Section Inflexae of Limnanthes, a new glucosinolate in L. floccosa, and QTL analysis in L. alba
TLDR
This work identified and quantitated seed glucosinolates in four species of Section Inflexae of Limnanthes to assess variation for this trait in primary and secondary gene pools of cultivated meadowfoam.
Production of fatty acid components of meadowfoam oil in somatic soybean embryos.
TLDR
To partially reconstruct the biosynthetic pathway of 20:1Delta(5) in transgenic plant tissues, cDNAs for the L. douglasii acyl-CoA desaturase and FAE1 were co-expressed in somatic soybean embryos.
Natural Variation in Seed Very Long Chain Fatty Acid Content Is Controlled by a New Isoform of KCS18 in Arabidopsis thaliana
Oil from oleaginous seeds is mainly composed of triacylglycerols. Very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) are major constituents of triacylglycerols in many seed oils and represent valuable feedstock
Production of 22:2Δ5,Δ13 and 20:1Δ5 in Brassica carinata and soybean breeding lines via introduction of Limnanthes genes
TLDR
The utility of soybean and B. carinata for the production of vegetable oils containing novel C20 and C22 fatty acids is demonstrated, and it is confirmed that the preferred substrates of the Lim Des5 are 20:0 and 22:1Δ3, respectively.
Genetic Mapping of a Macromutation and Quantitative Trait Loci underlying Fatty Acid Composition Differences in Meadowfoam Oil
TLDR
The aim of this study was to map the E locus and QTL affecting fatty acid concentrations among intersubspecific backcross progeny and found two significant QTL peaks were found for erucic and dienoic acid on Linkage Group 4.
A phenylalanine in DGAT is a key determinant of oil content and composition in maize
TLDR
Insight is provided into the molecular basis of natural variation of oil and oleic-acid contents in plants and DGAT is highlighted as a promising target for increasing oil and wort contents in other crops.
Selection for low erucic acid and genetic mapping of loci affecting the accumulation of very long-chain fatty acids in meadowfoam seed storage lipids.
TLDR
The goals of the present study were to develop low erucic acid lines and identify loci affecting the accumulation of 22:1(13) and other very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) in meadowfoam seed storage lipids.
Conserved simple sequence repeats for the Limnanthaceae (Brassicales)
TLDR
The SSR markers supply a critical mass of high-throughput DNA markers for biological and agricultural research across the Limnanthaceae and open the way to the development of a genetic linkage map for meadowfoam.
The Gene Controlling the Quantitative Trait Locus EPITHIOSPECIFIER MODIFIER1 Alters Glucosinolate Hydrolysis and Insect Resistance in Arabidopsis[W]
TLDR
In planta and in vitro analyses with natural E SM1 alleles, ESM1 knockouts, and overexpression lines show that ESM 1 represses nitrile formation and favors isothiocyanate production, which is associated with the ability to deter herbivory by Trichoplusia ni.
Seed-Specific Heterologous Expression of a Nasturtium FAE Gene in Arabidopsis Results in a Dramatic Increase in the Proportion of Erucic Acid1
TLDR
Results indicate that the nasturtium FAE gene encodes a condensing enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of very long chain fatty acids, utilizing monounsaturated and saturated acyl substrates.
