Abstract We have extensively searched for defective interfering (DI) particles in several picornaviruses. Contrary to expectations, only the originally described poliovirus type I strain ( C. N. Cole, D. Smoller, E. Wimmer, and D. Baltimore, 1971 , J. Virol. 7 , 478–485) gave rise to DI separable in CsCl density gradients.
