Abstract When incomes are ranked in descending order the social-evaluation function corresponding to the Gini relative inequality index can be written as a linear function withthe weights being the odd numbers in increasing order. We generalize this function by allowing the weights to be an arbitrary non-decreasing sequence of numbers. This results in a class of generalized Gini relative inequality indices and a class of generalized Gini absolute inequality indices. An axiomatic… Expand
EXTENDED GINI INDICES OF INEQUALITY
This paper suggests generalizations of the Gini indices of "relative" and " "absolute" inequality. The new families of indices are based respect ively on the Lorenz curve and the generalized LorenzExpand
Multidimensional generalized Gini indices
Summary. The axioms that characterize the generalized Gini social evaluation orderings for one-dimensional distributions are extended to the multidimensional attributes case. A social evaluationExpand

Representative endowments and uniform Gini orderings of multi-attribute inequality
For the comparison of inequality in multiple attributes the use of generalized Gini indices is proposed. Spectral social evaluation functions are used in the multivariate setting, and Gini dominanceExpand
Intersecting generalized Lorenz curves and the Gini index
Abstract. As is well known, the use of the Gini coefficient in comparisons is inconsistent with an utilitarian approach. This paper analyzes the Gini coefficient's normative significance in welfareExpand

Generalized Gini Indices of Equality of Opportunity
This article considers the ranking of profiles of opportunity sets on the basis of their equality. A version of the Pigou–Dalton transfer principle that is appropriate for the measurement ofExpand
An elementary characterization of the Gini index
TLDR
The Gini index is characterized as the unique function that satisfies the properties of scale invariance, symmetry, proportionality and convexity in similar rankings. Expand
New perspectives on the Gini and Bonferroni indices of inequality
This paper rigorously demonstrates that for any unequal income distribution, the well-known Gini index of inequality is bounded above by the recently revived Bonferroni inequality index. The bound isExpand
A new class of deprivation-based generalized Gini indices
Summary. This paper attempts to merge two strands of the literature on relative deprivation and generalized Gini indices by designing a new class of generalized Gini indices based on the concept ofExpand
