For systems in which the phase of the optical field function is a separable function of its coordinates, such as planar and cylindrical optical waveguide systems, it is shown that the generalized optical ray paths are equivalent to lines of constructive interference in the total wavefield in the system. As an application of the theory, it is shown how to calculate the constructive interference paths for the linear slab waveguide.
