We consider the Lagrangian of gravity covariantly amended by the mass and polynomial interaction terms with arbitrary coefficients and reinvestigate the consistency of such a theory in the decoupling limit, up to the fifth order in the nonlinearities. We calculate explicitly the self-interactions of the helicity-0 mode, as well as the nonlinear mixing between the helicity-0 and -2 modes. We show that ghostlike pathologies in these interactions disappear for special choices of the polynomial…

Nonlinear dynamics of 3D massive gravity

We explore the nonlinear classical dynamics of the three-dimensional theory of “New Massive Gravity” proposed by Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend. We find that the theory passes remarkably highly

Nonrenormalization and naturalness in a class of scalar-tensor theories

We study the renormalization of some dimension-4, 7 and 10 operators in a class of nonlinear scalar-tensor theories. These theories are invariant under: (a) linear diffeomorphisms which represent an

EFT of interacting spin-2 fields

We consider the effective field theory of multiple interacting massive spin-2 fields. We focus on the case where the interactions are chosen so that the cutoff is the highest possible, and highlight

Cosmic acceleration and the helicity-0 graviton

We explore cosmology in the decoupling limit of a nonlinear covariant extension of Fierz-Pauli massive gravity obtained recently in arXiv:1007.0443. In this limit the theory is a scalar-tensor model

Structures in multiple spin-2 interactions

We study generalisations of ghost-free bimetric theory which involve more than two spin-2 fields. The consistent interactions can enter in the form of two different couplings and in the majority of

No-go theorems for unitary and interacting partially massless spin-two fields.

There cannot exist a unitary theory of a PM spin-two field coupled to Einstein gravity with a perturbatively local Lagrangian, and it is shown that the PM limit of massive gravity also lacks the PM gauge symmetry.

Strong interactions and exact solutions in nonlinear massive gravity

We investigate strong coupling effects in a covariant massive gravity model, which is a candidate for a ghost-free non-linear completion of Fierz-Pauli. We analyse the conditions to recover general

Cosmology in generalized Proca theories

We consider a massive vector field with derivative interactions that propagates only the 3 desired polarizations (besides two tensor polarizations from gravity) with second-order equations of motion

Stability of Horndeski vector-tensor interactions

We study the Horndeski vector-tensor theory that leads to second order equations of motion and contains a non-minimally coupled abelian gauge vector field. This theory is remarkably simple and

Ghosts, strong coupling and accidental symmetries in massive gravity

We show that the strong self-interaction of the scalar polarization of a massive graviton can be understood in terms of the propagation of an extra ghostlike degree of freedom, thus relating strong

Galileon as a local modification of gravity

In the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) model, the "self-accelerating" solution is plagued by a ghost instability, which makes the solution untenable. This fact, as well as all interesting departures

Nonperturbative Continuity in Graviton Mass versus Perturbative Discontinuity

We address the question whether a graviton could have a small nonzero mass. The issue is subtle for two reasons: there is a discontinuity in the mass in the lowest tree-level approximation, and,

Graviton Mass or Cosmological Constant

To describe a massive graviton in 4D Minkowski space-time one introduces a quadratic term in the Lagrangian. This term, however, can lead to a readjustment or instability of the background instead of

DBI and the Galileon reunited

We derive the relativistic generalization of the Galileon, by studying the brane position modulus of a relativistic probe brane embedded in a five- dimensional bulk. In the appropriate Galilean

Strong Interactions and Stability in the DGP Model

The model of Dvali, Gabadadze, and Porrati (DGP) gives a simple geometrical setup in which gravity becomes 5-dimensional at distances larger than a length scale lambda(DGP). We show that this theory

Dynamical Structure and Definition of Energy in General Relativity

The problem of the dynamical structure and definition of energy for the classical general theory of relativity is considered on a formal level. As in a previous paper, the technique used is the
