A general approach to block-matching motion estimation is introduced. It very well handles the complex motion found in broadcasting television signals by comparing each block of the current frame with a deformed quadrilateral of the previous one. Calculation of the extra motion information requires additional operations that increase the computational load but the improved prediction reduces the bit rate.
