The arginine vasotocin (AVT) system of the avian brain includes a sexually dimorphic part that extends from the caudal part of preoptic region through the medial part of the bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BSTm) to the lateral septum. It is composed of the parvocellular neurons located in the BSTm and the dense innervation of the medial preoptic region and lateral septum. In this part of the brain, AVT expression is stronger in males than in females in a few bird species investigated to date…
Vasotocin and reproductive functions of the domestic chicken.
The parvocellular vasotocin system of Japanese quail: a developmental and adult model for the study of influences of gonadal hormones on sexually differentiated and behaviorally relevant neural circuits.
TLDR
The restoration by T of the VT immunoreactivity in castrated male quail could be fully mimicked by a treatment with estradiol (E(2), suggesting that the aromatization of T into E(2) may play a key limiting role in both the activation of male sexual behavior and the induction of VT synthesis.
Estradiol Mediates Effects of Testosterone on Vasotocin Immunoreactivity in the Adult Quail Brain
TLDR
The effects of T metabolites in the brain were not fully correlated with their effects on the activation of male copulatory behavior, suggesting that the increase in VT expression in thebrain does not represent a necessary step for the activationof behavior.
Chemoarchitectonic subdivisions of the songbird septum and a comparative overview of septum chemical anatomy in jawed vertebrates
TLDR
A large dataset of double‐, triple‐, and quadruple‐labeled material in a variety of songbird species is prepared, suggesting that many features of the septum are highly conserved across vertebrate taxa.
Testosterone Stimulates Mounting Behavior and Arginine Vasotocin Expression in the Brain of both Sexual and Unisexual Whiptail Lizards
TLDR
The distribution and abundance of AVT cell bodies and fibers would reflect the propensity of males and females of the two species to display male-typical copulatory behavior, and both this propensity and AVT abundance are controlled by androgens.
Sensitive Periods, Vasotocin-Family Peptides, and the Evolution and Development of Social Behavior
TLDR
This review synthesizes comparative work on vasotocin-family peptides during development and classic work on early forms of social learning in developmental psychobiology to hypothesize that vasotockides are involved in the evolution of social behaviors through their influence on learning during sensitive periods in social development.

Development of sexually dimorphic vasotocinergic system in the bed nucleus of stria terminalis in chickens
TLDR
In males, another increase in sexually dimorphic AVT‐ir cells and innervation of the lateral septum was associated with the onset of puberty and fully matched a pattern observed in adult fowls.
Intracerebral Sex Differences in the Vasotocin System in Birds: Possible Implication in Behavioral and Autonomic Functions
TLDR
It remains undetermined whether the observed neuroanatomical sex differences are related to sexually dimorphic autonomic and behavioral effects induced by VT, but most likely, VT in birds has a modulatory rather than a specific regulatory function in control of male sexual behavior and vocalization.
Ontogenetic and seasonal changes in immunoreactive vasotocin in the canary brain.
Anatomical and neurochemical definition of the nucleus of the stria terminalis in japanese quail (Coturnix japonica)
TLDR
Cytoarchitectonic, immunohistochemical, and in situ hybridization data support the notion that this area is similar and is probably homologous to the medial part of the nucleus of the stria terminalis of the mammalian brain.
Sexual dimorphism in numbers of vasotocin-immunoreactive neurons in brain areas associated with reproductive behaviors in the roughskin newt.
TLDR
The results indicate that the functional interactions between gonadal steroid hormones and VT are complex and appear to involve site-, sex-, and season-specific regulatory mechanisms.
Sexual dimorphism of arg-vasotocin gene expressing neurons in the telencephalon and dorsal diencephalon of the domestic fowl. An immunocytochemical and in situ hybridization study
TLDR
It is suggested that the sexually dimorphic vasotocinergic circuit may be involved in the co-ordination of behavioural and autonomic functions in response to environmental stress.
