We consider the space-time variation of gauge couplings in brane-world models induced by the coupling to a bulk scalar field. A variation is generated by the running of the gauge couplings with energy and a conformal anomaly while going from the Jordan to the Einstein frame. We indicate that the one-loop corrections cancel implying that one obtains a variation of the fine structure constant by either directly coupling the gauge fields to the bulk scalar field or having bulk scalar field…
Low Energy Branes, Effective Theory and Cosmology
The low energy regime of cosmological BPS-brane configurations with a bulk scalar field is studied. We construct a systematic method to obtain five-dimensional solutions to the full system of
On Newton's law in supersymmetric braneworld models
We study the propagation of gravitons within 5-D supersymmetric braneworld models with a bulk scalar field. The setup considered here consists of a 5-D bulk spacetime bounded by two 4-D branes
Brane world cosmology
Recent developments in the physics of extra dimensions have opened up new avenues to test such theories. We review cosmological aspects of brane world scenarios such as the Randall–Sundrum brane
Braneworld Cosmology, the CMB and the Radion
Recent developments in the theory of extra dimensions have opened up avenues to confront such theories with cosmological tests. We discuss a brane-world model with a bulk scalar field, motivated by
Observational constraints on braneworld geometry
The low energy regime of 5D braneworld models with a bulk scalar field is studied. The setup is rather general and includes the Randall-Sundrum and dilatonic braneworlds models as particular cases.
Variations in the fine structure constant constraining gravity theories
In this paper, we investigate how the fine structure constant, $\alpha$, locally varies in the presence of a static and spherically symmetric gravitational source. The procedure consists in
Is the radion a chameleon
The chameleon mechanism is a way to give an effective mass to a light scalar field via field self-interaction and interaction with matter. We study this mechanism in models in which the couplings are
Observing braneworld black holes
Spacetime in the vicinity of an event horizon can be probed using observations which explore the dynamics of the accretion disc. Many high energy theories of gravity lead to modifications of the near
Variations of the Fine Structure Constant in Space and Time
This thesis describes a detailed investigation of the effects of matter inhomogeneities on the cosmological evolution of the fine structure constant using the Bekenstein-Sandvik-Barrow-Magueijo
Cosmological bounds to the variation of the Higgs vacuum expectation value: BBN constraints
Abstract We calculate the dependence of the deuterium binding energy upon the Higgs vacuum expectation value ( v ), by using different effective nucleon–nucleon potentials, and set constraints on the

The scalar-tensor theory of gravitation
The scalar-tensor theory of gravitation is one of the most popular alternatives to Einstein's theory of gravitation. This book provides a clear and concise introduction to the theoretical ideas and
