Gain-of-function c-kit gene mutations and immunoreactivity of the c-kit protein CD117 in many gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) seem to support the idea that GISTs form a biologically distinct entity. In this study, the clinicopathologic features of 171 cases of GIST at a single institution were investigated for accurate diagnosis, and their relative risk for mortality was estimated by multivariate analysis.
