Stimulation of HCl secretion by gastric parietal cells requires the fusion of cytoplasmic H(+)-K(+)-ATPase-bearing tubulovesicles with the apical membrane. This insertion of membrane results in a dramatic increase in apical surface area through the formation of microvilli.
