Macroscopic traffic models have recently been severely criticized to base on lax analogies only and to have a number of deficiencies. Therefore, this paper shows how to construct a logically consistent fluid-dynamic traffic model from basic laws for the acceleration and interaction of vehicles. These considerations lead to the gas-kinetic traffic equation of Paveri-Fontana. Its stationary and spatially homogeneous solution implies equilibrium relations for the `fundamental diagram', the…

Numerical solution of the macroscopic traffic equations is obtained and its characteristics are analyzed and a kind of Chapman-Enskog method is developed to calculate the traffic pressure at the Navier-Stokes level.

High resolution, stability, and robustness are demonstrated of the proposed non-oscillatory central schemes for a traffic flow model with Arrhenius look-ahead dynamics, which are used to numerically investigate both dispersive and smoothing effects of the global flux.

Gas–Kinetic Model for Multilane Heterogeneous Traffic Flow
- Computer Science
- 1999
A gas–kinetic traffic flow model is presented that describes the traffic flow operations of heterogeneous traffic on specific lanes of a motorway and how the multilane-multiclass model relates to traditional aggregate-lane and mixed-class gas-kinetic equations is shown.
Kinetic derivation of Aw-Rascle-Zhang-type traffic models with driver-assist vehicles
- EngineeringJournal of Statistical Physics
- 2021
Numerical insights show that the presence of driver-assist vehicles produces an aggregate homogenisation of the mean flow speed, which may also be steered towards a suitable desired speed in such a way that optimal flows and traffic stabilisation are reached.

It is still unknown whether there are families of tight knots whose lengths grow faster than linearly with crossing numbers, but the largest power has been reduced to 3/z, and some other physical models of knots as flattened ropes or strips which exhibit similar length versus complexity power laws are surveyed.
