The intercellular junctions between the pinealocytes of male rats were investigated by freeze-fracture and conventional electron microscopy. Our findings reveal that the intercellular contacts between pineal cells, formerly described as zonulae adhaerentes or zonulae occludentes, are in fact gap junctions which are difficult to characterize in thin sections due to their peculiar geometrical arrangement, which is in the form of "fenestrated" communicating zonules.
