With the proliferation of microcomputer based project management packages Gantt charts have enjoyed a revival in their use. Although Henry L. Gantt is recognized as their developer their origins and provenance are less well known. Gantt was a close associate of Frederick W. Taylor and an advocate of Scientific Management. His paper describing the use of “graphics” for general production planning appeared alongside Taylor’s Shop Management in 1903 and was an integral and critical component of… Expand

Gantt charts revisited: A critical analysis of its roots and implications to the management of projects today
TLDR
By showing the conceptual roots of the Gantt chart, the authors hope to make some of its limitations more evident to practitioners and academics, and encourage its use to be more reflective and contextualised. Expand
A case study in Gantt charts as historiophoty: A century of psychology at the University of Alberta.
  • M. Dawson
  • Sociology, Medicine
  • History of psychology
  • 2013
TLDR
The current article proposes that a particular type of graph, known as a Gantt chart, is well suited for conducting historiophoty, and shows how the history of psychology at the University of Alberta is revealed by examining this GantT chart in a variety of different ways. Expand
LiveGantt: Interactively Visualizing a Large Manufacturing Schedule
TLDR
LiveGantt is built with newly designed algorithms and interactions to improve conventional charts with better scalability, explorability, and reschedulability and is equipped with an efficient rescheduler to allow users to instantaneously modify their schedules based on their scheduling experience in the fields. Expand
The Multiple Meanings of a Flowchart
From the very earliest days of electronic computing, flowcharts have been used to represent the conceptual structure of complex software systems. In much of the literature on software development,Expand
The Multiple Meanings of a Flowchart
TLDR
Drawing on the sociological concept of the boundary object, this article explores the material culture of software development with a particular focus on the ways in which flowcharts served as political artifacts within the emerging communities of practices of computer programming. Expand
Activity scheduling through gantt charts in an ms excel spreadsheet
TLDR
The present work introduces the implementation grounds of a simple information technology development for the construction of Gantt charts as decision making support tools for people or companies that have limited access to sophisticated information technology tools. Expand
Deconstructing the reinvention of operations management
The purpose is to provide an intellectual history of Operations Management, particularly noting recent developments and its underlying continuity with earlier systems and thinking. OperationsExpand
Diagramas gantt para programación de actividades en el tiempo en diferentes recursos usando ms excel
TLDR
The present work introduces the implementation grounds of a simple information technology development for the construction of Gantt charts as decision making support tools for people or companies that have limited access to sophisticated information technology tools. Expand
Information in an Industrial Culture: Walter A. Shewhart and the Evolution of the Control Chart, 1917–1954
Abstract:This study analyzes the factors that shaped Walter Shewhart’s 1924 development of the control chart at Bell Telephone Laboratories. The control chart is a graphical construct that usesExpand
The Perspectives of Taylor, Gantt, and Johnson: How to Improve Production Scheduling
TLDR
This paper examines the key contributions of three individuals: Frederick W. Taylor, who defined the key planning functions and created a planning office; Henry L. Gantt, who provided useful charts to improve scheduling decision-making, and Selmer M. Johnson, who wrote a highly influential paper on the mathematical analysis of production scheduling problems. Production scheduling: An interactive graphical approach
Abstract This project developed an interactive computer graphics approach to construction and modification of schedules for a work center. The system handles problems involving sequence-dependentExpand
A System for Manufacturing Scheduling with Interactive Computer Graphics
TLDR
The implementation contains three parts, each of which is graphically displayed and manipulated: a network-based model for describing the basic operation of the factory, a Gantt chart for scheduling theFactory, and plots of inventory levels over time for evaluating the schedule. Expand
Computerized shop floor scheduling
TLDR
This article describes the evolutionary process from basically a computerized Kanban to an attempted computerization of the Drum-Buffer-Rope technique, and the reasoning that brought this evolution so quickly to its ultimate conclusion. Expand
Project management using microcomputers
TLDR
This paper examines microcomputer applications in managing projects, and reviews the current status of software, provides examples of use, and implementation considerations. Expand
An interactive graphical aided scheduling system
TLDR
The author proposes a computer based interactive graphical aid which can provide data of computational analysis in forms more compatible with the needs and environment of the production scheduler. Expand
Principles of industrial organization
The period 1890-1940 marks the first systematic attempt to analyze and understand how commercial organizations function. Prior to this period, most attention had been focused on inputs into businessExpand
The local search approach to flexible flow line scheduling
Abstract Local search methods are presented for scheduling a flexible flow line. We consider the problem of entry point sequencing, that is, deciding the order in which to present the jobs to theExpand

A decision support system for job shop scheduling
TLDR
An interactive job shop scheduling program and a new approach to due-date selection which is implemented in the program, which was designed for a labour constrained workshop at the University of Stellenbosch are described. Expand
Effects of Adaptive Process Planning on Job Cost and Lateness Measures
TLDR
A prototype system is developed which adapts routings according to job specification and due date, as well as shop conditions, to compare against the traditional fixed method and two single‐focus, adaptive strategies drawn from research. Expand
