Gankyrin is a new oncoprotein with potent cell cycle and apoptotic properties that is overexpressed early in hepatocarcinogenesis and in hepatocellular carcinomas. Gankyrin regulates the phosphorylation of the retinoblastoma protein (pRb) by CDK4 and enhances the ubiquitylation of p53 by the RING ubiquitin ligase MDM2.
